ZORRO: The Ballet Recap

“This ballet was big, bold and beautiful” said Gwen Curran from The Register Guard. “The standing ovation at the end said it best: This is another hit for Ballet Fantastique.”

After long nights of rehearsal, hard work, and much needed volunteers, sponsors, and supporters, ZORRO: The Ballet was a wonderful success! With live music from the band Incendio, and violinist virtuoso Kim Angelis, Ballet Fantastique was able to create another dramatic, all-original ballet production!

Alex Notman, Arts Editor for Eugene Weekly, said, “The costumes and choreography were bright, innovative and fearless. All set against a music backdrop by the California-based Incendio Band, an exhilarating mix of Spanish guitar, violin and a dash of rock ‘n’ roll.”

You can read more about what she thought about Zorro here!

This past weekend was also the final days of our 2012 Oregon Ducks Liquid Lightning Football Helmet raffle valued at $1200! The drawing happened during the BFan cast party after the Sunday matinee. Congratulations Brandon Gray on being the raffle winner!

We want to thank everyone who came to ZORRO: The Ballet and to those who contributed and helped make this production possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

The Sounds of ZORRO® the Ballet!

Other than dramatic all-original choreography, witty storytelling, and playful dance theater, Ballet Fantastique is featuring live music at ZORRO® The Ballet premiere! BFan is so excited to be working with incredibly talented music artists, the LA-based Latin-fusion band Incendio and virtuoso violinist-composer Kim Angelis. In fact, we are so excited that we wanted to share a little bit of background with you about our special guest artists before attending the premiere!

Ballet Fantastique is happy to welcome back the LA-based Latin-fusion band Incendio (meaning “fire” in Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish). BFan last collaborated with them when the company toured to the Seattle area. Incendio just recently came across one of their many milestones: their eighth release– The Shape of Dreams.

Incendio describes themselves as “instrumental world music.” Formed in 1999 by Jim Stubblefield, Jean-Pierre Durand and Liza Carbé, Incendio’s sound is a unique blend of classical, jazz, rock, flamenco, Celtic, and even bluegrass. Their music has been featured on The History Channel, A & E, Showtime and songs by its members have been used in video games like Far Cry 3 and popular movies like Bridesmaids. We are also excited to celebrate Incendio’s recent award for the 10th Annual Instrumental Album Vox Pop Winner!

BFan is also happy to be collaborating with the Astoria-based, virtuoso violinist-composer Kim Angelis! Performing her unique brand of gypsy-flamenco contemporary string music all across the world, it has been featured at the Olympics and World Cup gymnastics events, in film, and on television! She was also named the winner of the “ASCAP Plus” award… TWICE!

Kim Angelis

Kim’s music is built on a solid classical foundation, but the inspiration flows freely from the Romany Diaspora of Eastern Europe, Russia, and Spain. Her brilliant compositions showcase the beauty, power, and excitement of her playing.

The combination of these two incredibly talented musical artists are going to make ZORRO® the Ballet a premiere you won’t want to miss!

As Ballet Fantastique‘s intern team dives head-first into planning for the 13-14 season kickoff Gala, they decide to share some behind the scenes thoughts with you about what its been like!

From themes, to location, to drinks and hors d’oeuvres, planning for the 13-14 Season Kickoff Gala: TIMELESS has been both crazy and exciting!

Today, all of us interns went to see the secret location for the Gala, which will be only revealed to ticket holders–in due time. Looking at the space made us excited, yet a little bit worried at the same time.

What worries us the most about our location is that even though it is a beautiful space and we are so thankful to be able to us it, it’s pretty much a blank canvas. Meaning, we will have to somehow get most of the decoration ourselves— and set up— on a very small budget. However, some of us interns also agree that it’s even more exciting that it’s a blank slate, so we can transform the unique space into whatever kind of vision we have!

The intern team all agrees that after months of hard work, and many, many phone calls, we are so excited to present each of the luxury silent auction baskets. We don’t want to give away the swanky auction items, but we can say that some of them will be including destination giveaways!

If you want to know more about the theme of the gala, the intern team created a Pinterest board for inspiration! We wanted to go with a “Made in Manhattan” theme where Mad Men meets Breakfast at Tiffany’s. We are talking about red carpets, sounds of vintage vinyl, champagne, and fad hors d’oeuvres.

We want those who attend the Gala to feel special in some way. Whether that be VIP couches, or getting a sneak peek of season previews from the BFan dancers before anyone else sees Donna and Hannah’s newest choreography.

We’re even thinking about coordinating outfits! Find us interns in pretty black cocktail dresses walking around serving hors d’oeuvres on vinyl vintage records! We hope you decide to come celebrate with us the new season in style with BFan’s artists in the era that never fades!

Mark your calendars! Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8 pm.

Company Dancer Resolutions!

Ballet Fantastique is honored to have two incredibly talented male company artists! This week we wanted to make sure they didn’t feel left out by asking them what their dance resolutions were for this upcoming 13-14 season: NEW LEGENDS. This is what they had to say…

Justin, a BFan company dancer since 2011, said: “I want to achieve a greater level of control, better extensions, and solidify my triple pirouettes.”

Fabio Simoes, one of BFan’s newest company dancers, said: “It’s going to be a really good season, a new fresh start! I want to get back in shape and focus on getting into the classic scene again, and try to absorb -even more- what people have to give to me!”

Also, don’t forget about Ballet Fantastique’s upcoming ZORRO® The Ballet premiere! Opening BFan’s NEW LEGENDS season with dramatic all-original choreography, witty storytelling, brilliant live music, and playful dance theater.

What’s in a Company Dancer’s Bag?

As Ballet Fantastique‘s 13-14 Season: NEW LEGENDS jump starts with company dancer rehearsals every day for ZORRO® The Ballet, we were curious about what they carried with them to every practice. We asked some of them if we could take a peek in their dance bags and what we found was both fun and helpful, so we decided to should share them with you!

We took a sneak peek in Leanne's bag to see what she carries in her dance bag at all times!
